Scenic Driving Routes of the Axarquia/Costa del Sol
The Axarquia/Costa del Sol
Located at the most oriental part of the Malaga Province limiting with the province of Granada. The Axarquia extends from the interior towards the coast. Its coastal municipalities make what is called the Oriental Costa del Sol. In terms of its name etymology the Real Spanish acedemy defines "jarquia" as a district or territory which is placed on the eastern side of a big town and at the same time which depends from the town's resources. It means the word comes from the Arab term sarqiyya which means oriental part.
This locality enjoys great touristic interest for several reasons, because of its climate, its interior with natural mountain range spaces, mounts, slopes and gorges and because of its coast with its marvellous beaches. Due to this diversity it is an ideal place to enjoy singular landscapes.
Trekking lovers will be able to enjoy spectacular spots, surrounded by unequalled fauna and flora, thanks to the spectacular Tejeda-Almijara y Alhama mountain range which was declared Natural Park in 1999. The "Montes" goat plays an important in this area. Geographically speaking La Maroma represents the park's highest peak, 2069 metres. A curious fact is that in the Tejeda Mountain Range consistent limestones are commonly found, however, in the Almijara Mountain Range, more oriental and larger in extension, structures of dolomitic marbles are found.
