May Fiestas and Celebrations near Competa

FESTIVALS IN MAY

NERJA   14-15th,  Fiesta of San Isidro, parade from the Balcon de Europa to the Nerja Caves. Traditional costume, floats and oxen. One of Nerja's most stunning Fiestas, that celebrates San Isidro, who is the patron saint of farmers. The Saint is carried from the church of el Salvador, on the Balcon de Europa, to the Hermitage of San Isidro next to the Caves of Nerja. Accompanying the Saint on his journey is a spectacular procession of decorated carts pulled by oxen, or tractors, Andalucian horses with their riders wearing typical Andalucian costume, as well as a few modern vechicles often decorated in brightly coloured polka-dots. The whole procession arrives at the caves where a celebration is held with stalls, BBQ's, paella, or you can bring your own picnic. Live music and entertainment is also provided.

TORRE DEL MAR   23rd,    Fiesta

FRIGILIANA    3rd,  Dia de la Cruz,   celebrated with flowers adorning every street corner and balcony.

SAYALONGA,   1st Sunday,  The Day of the Nispero, harvesting of the nisperos. The celebration includes all those involved with the production of this fruit when the nisperos are in full splendour. The fruit is distributed as well as marmalade produced from nisperos together with other typical produce of the area.

COMPETA, 3rd, Dia de la Cruz.    Worship and devotion to the Holy Cross where Christ gave his life for us goes back to the early Christians. On May 3rd, Competa celebrates the Day of the Cross. This day has been celebrated in the municipality for many years. There is a tradition of walking to Cruz del Monte and picnicing, with the people who live there. In the Plaza del Carmen, people make crosses of flowers to take up to Cruz del Monte, an urbanisation just above the village.
